Safety in public buildings and at workplaces has become an increasing focus
of attention in recent years. Fires in public buildings and underground
stations have drawn attention to the necessity for an escape route system that
works even in the worst circumstances, such as no electricity, smoke and
panic.
Lumilux® N and SN products are used for safety-way-guidance systems that meet
international standards. These phosphorescent materials with long afterglow
properties are integrated in specially designed components of standardized silk
screen printed safety signs, dispersion paints, plastics and resins. Under
regular illumination, these signs are completely unobtrusive and blend into
building structures. Under darkness due to power failure, they glow strongly
and guide people’s way. These pigments can be found in safety-passage way-and
exit guidance systems in public buildings, hospitals, factories, stations and
tunnels, as well as on trains, airplanes and ships.
Pigments for safety applications must meet the minimum afterglow requirements
of international standards. The relevant metric for these requirements is DIN
67510-1 regulation that is internationally recognized as the standard for
testing. In North America, safety sign standards are set up in the Emergency
Lighting and Power Equipment as published by UL 924 (Underwriters Laboratories)
Specification. For safety applications, Honeywell offers zinc sulfide-based
Lumilux Green N-grades and the new, much brighter alkaline earth aluminates
Lumilux Green SN-grades. Both types of pigments can be used for phosphorescent
safety products, such as:
 | Afterglowing guidance lines for wall, floor and exit door markings |
 | Direction signs |
 | Arrows, footprints and dots for floor markings |
 | Internationally and nationally standardized safety signs |
 | Safety and rescue equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits and
fire hoses |
 | Afterglow markings on staircases to mark the steps |
 | Handrail markings |
 | Door handles and opening device markers |
The relevant metrics for these requirements are technical standards and
codes, for instance:
 | DIN 67510-1, parts-1, 2, 3,
4 (Photoluminescent pigments and products) |
 | UL 924, Underwrite Laboratories, Standard for Emergency
Lighting and Power Equipment |
 | UL 1994, Luminous Egress Path Marking Systems |
 | NFPA 101. Life Safety Code (allows photoluminescent
high-performance exit signs in high-location installations if they are listed
in compliance with UL 924 |
 | APTA SS-PS-004, Standard for Low Location Exit Path
Marking |
 | ISO/DIS 16069,
Graphical Symbols, Safety signs, Safety way guidance systems |
Honeywell Specialty Materials can produce customized luminescent pigments to
