Honeywell's Low Global Warming Technologies

Mobile Air Conditioning - HFO-1234yf

Mobile Air Conditioning - HFO-1234yf

Automakers around the world are seeking a cost-effective, viable low global warming potential (GWP) replacement for R-134a refrigerant. Honeywell is working with the global auto industry to develop HFO-1234yf, a next-generation fluorinated solution that meets European Union low-GWP requirements. It can be used in the existing fleet of automobiles without requiring a complete redesign of current air conditioning systems, leading to lower overall car costs and faster adoption by automakers.

Our alternative has the lowest life-cycle climate performance (LCCP) rating of any R-134a replacement option - including CO2 - due to its higher energy efficiency, which results in lower fuel consumption. Moreover, the atmospheric lifetime of HFO-1234yf is just 11 days, compared to 13 years for today's R-134a.

Key benefits:
Near drop-in replacement for R-134a
More energy-efficient refrigerant than CO2 at AC temperatures
Acknowledged as a global solution - meaning it performs as well or better than other options in all climates.
Estimated to cut the cost of an auto air conditioning system by 50% compared to a CO2 system.
