Process and Commercial Refrigeration
|
 |
 |
Honeywell is the global leader in the development and manufacture of
non-ozone depleting refrigerants for process and commercial refrigeration
applications. We also offer a variety of HCFC-based interim solutions to make
it easier to replace CFCs. Honeywell refrigeration products are often approved
or recommended by equipment manufacturers.

Replacing R-12
|
For replacing R-12, options include Genetron® 134a, Genetron® 409A,
Genetron® MP39 (R-401A) and Genetron® MP66 (R-402A). Genetron 409A provides
more cooling capacity than other R-12 replacements, and can be used in most
systems to quickly replace R-12 while maintaining a mineral oil lubricant. For
R-12 systems where the evaporator temperature is below -10°F, including
transport refrigeration, Genetron MP66 may be the best solution.
When a non-ozone depleting (non-HCFC) solution is desired, Honeywell recommends
retrofitting to Genetron 134a. Although retrofitting to R-134a requires
replacing some or all of the mineral oil with lubricants soluble with HFC
refrigerants, R-134a is an excellent match in performance to R-12 and is
approved by most equipment manufacturers. |

Replacing R-13 and R-503
|
| Genetron® 23 offers capacity between that of R-13 and R-503, and a higher
discharge temperature than R-12. R-508B is also available, and offers a
capacity similar to R-503 with a lower discharge temperature. |
| |
Replacing R-502
|
| For replacing R-502, Honeywell recommends Genetron® HP80 (R-402A) and
Genetron® 408A for easy retrofits using alkylbenzene or polyol ester
lubricants. In R-502 ice machines, Genetron® HP81 (R-402B) provides a higher
discharge temperature than R-502 and allows for rapid harvest cycles in certain
types of equipment. |

Replacing R-22
|
Several options are available for replacing R-22, and trade-offs of
equipment changes, capacity losses, and energy efficiency should be considered
when selecting to best retrofit product. Genetron® 407C offers the closest
capacity match to R-22, but can result in small efficiency losses. Although it
allows for retrofitting with the fewest equipment changes, it has a moderate
degree of glide and cannot be used in systems with flooded evaporators.
For most systems, Honeywell recommends Genetron 404A® or Genetron® AZ-50®
(R-507) refrigerants. These products are similar in composition and
performance. The key difference is that R-507 is an azeotrope that can be used
in flooded evaporators, and has no glide and can be easily recycled or
reclaimed without a resulting change in composition. |

New Refrigeration Systems
|
| Medium temperature refrigeration refers to applications where the desired
product temperature is above +10°F. Low temperature refrigeration typically
refers to applications where the desired product temperature is between -40°F
and +10°F. In new equipment, Honeywell recommends the use of HFC refrigerants
Genetron® 134a, Genetron® 404A or Genetron® AZ-50® (R-507) refrigerants.
Although Genetron® 22 is a standard solution for some applications and can
continue to be used in new systems for several more years, increasing
regulatory requirements and eventual supply issues should be considered before
selecting HCFC refrigerants for systems expected to have operating lifetimes
longer than 10 years. |

Specialty Refrigeration Products
|
| Honeywell offers several specialty products to help solve unique design
situations. Genetron® 124 is a medium-pressure refrigerant used in some chiller
applications or cooling in situations with high ambient temperatures. Other
products available for specialty applications include Genetron® 125 (R-125),
Genetron® 23 (R-23), and Genetron® 245fa (R-245fa). Equipment manufacturers
should contact Honeywell directly for help in identifying the right
solution. |
