Genetron 123, a HCFC, is a low-pressure, very low ozone depleting compound
used in new and retrofit centrifugal chillers. Genetron 123 is available in
100, 200, and 630 pound drums.
R-123 holds a B1 ASHRAE Safety classification. Technicians working on equipment
containing R-123 should follow all safety and handling instructions according
to the equipment manufacturer.
R-123 will be affected by the phase out of ozone-depleting refrigerants. A
potential long-term replacement for use in new centrifugal chillers is Genetron
245fa, a low-pressure non-ozone depleting refrigerant currently being evaluated
by equipment manufacturers.
