Honeywell Introduces New Highly Efficient, Low-Global-Warming Performance Fluid For Precision Cleaning Applications

Solstice™ Performance Fluid combines excellent solvency, safety, sustainability and cost-effectiveness in a superior cleaner for the electronics, medical device and other precision parts industries

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., Oct. 20, 2011 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today introduced a new low-global-warming performance fluid specifically designed for critical cleaning of precision metal and plastic parts, including electronics and medical devices.

Solstice Performance Fluid, part of Honeywell's growing line of Solstice low-global-warming materials, offers superior performance with significantly lower global warming impact.

"Solstice Performance Fluid delivers the four dimensions that are most important to solvent users: excellent cleaning performance; safety in use; ultra-low carbon-dioxide emissions; and cost-effectiveness," said Terrence Hahn, vice president and general manager for Honeywell Fluorine Products. “This is another example of Solstice family of low-global-warming-potential products, which are helping customers around the world lower their carbon footprint while maximizing performance in their applications."

Solstice Performance Fluid exhibits superior solvency for a wide variety of solutes including hydrocarbon oils, silicone oils, silicone greases, fluorinated oils, mineral oils, acrylics, solder fluxes, hydraulic fluids and others. The fluid has similar solvency effectiveness to CFC-113, but does not harm most substrates. It also exhibits very low surface tension, and is both thermally and hydrolytically stable.

It is also compatible with many commonly used plastics and elastomers, and metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, cold rolled steel, copper, galvanized steel and tinplate. Because Solstice Performance Fluid is non-flammable, it does not require expensive explosion-proof equipment and handling, unlike certain other solvents.

It is also more cost-effective compared to other currently available cleaning solutions because of its reduced solvent loss, reduced energy requirement for processing and drying, its contribution to cleaning vs. high-cost fillers, its lack of post-process non-volatile residue and its potential as a drop-in alternative in aerosol cleaners.

Solstice Performance Fluid and blends have been identified and tested for efficacy in the following delivery methods: aerosol, vapor, immersion and line flushing.

When substituted for solvents currently in use, Solstice Performance Fluid has the potential to make significant contributions to reductions in global warming. With a global warming potential of less than 7, its widespread adoption could save about 4 million metric tons per year of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is comparable to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from more than 700,000 cars every year.*

Honeywell's Solstice family of products are based on hydrofluoro-olefin technology and offer similar or improved performance when compared with today's most widely used stationary and mobile refrigerants, blowing agents and aerosol propellants. The products have dramatically reduced GWPs compared with today’s widely used fluorocarbons.

The family includes: Solstice Mobile Air-Conditioning Refrigerant, which is being broadly adopted by the automotive industry for use as a refrigerant in car air-conditioning systems; Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent, which is being used in appliance insulation and both residential and commercial building spray-foam insulation; Solstice Gas Blowing Agent, which is being used in extruded polystyrene board applications; and Solstice Propellant for aerosols.
