The research program of the International Association of Automotive
Engineers (SAE) recommends Honeywell's coolant with low global warming
potential for use in vehicle air conditioning systems in order to comply with
the new more stringent regulations in Europe. According to SAE, coolant
HFO-1234yf boasts excellent environmental properties and is associated with
with the lowest risks. Detailed tests have shown that vehicles using this
coolant consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions (greenhouse gases) than
vehicles that use alternative coolants. The tests also showed that although one
of the possible alternatives, CO2, had a global warning potential (GWP) of one.
It was less efficient that the recommended coolant.
