Alpha methylstyrene is a flammable liquid and vapor. High temperatures, inhibitor depletion, accidental impurities, or exposure to radiation or oxidizers may cause a spontaneous polymerizing reaction generating heat and pressure. Closed containers may rupture or explode during runaway polymerization. Vapors may form an explosive mixture with air. Vapors may be heavier than air and may travel along the ground to some distant source of ignition and flash back. AMS is a lung irritant and may affect the female's reproductive capabilities. It also may affect the liver, the kidneys, or cause skin sensitization. It may cause nervous system issues.
AMS can obtain an electrostatic charge during processing activities including: storage, mixing, filtering, or pumping. This can create a spark hazard and, therefore, a fire hazard. Also, a sudden release of such materials from storage or process equipment particularly at elevated temperatures, and/or pressures, can result in ignitions from static absent any apparent ignition source. Flashpoint and auto-ignition values obtained from standard test conditions may not be applicable to other situations; therefore, the safe use of this material in any process should be reviewed by one familiar with both the storage and processing conditions of this material. As with all chemicals, good industrial hygiene practices should be followed when handling this material. When the container is empty it may retain product residue including vapors which could accumulate. Therefore, do not cut, drill, grind, or weld empty containers. Additionally, do not conduct such activities near full, partially full, or empty product containers without appropriate workplace safety authorization or permits. Protect containers from physical abuse and keep containers tightly closed. Keep this material in a cool, well-ventilated place and eliminate all sources of ignition. Bond and ground containers when transferring material.
If eye, skin or inhalation exposure does occur, treat promptly as directed and seek medical attention immediately if necessary.
Skin contact:
Immediately take off all contaminated clothing. Flush with large amounts of water. If any adverse effects persist, get medical attention. Irritation may result from an emergency or an unexpected acute overexposure.
Eye contact:
Rinse immediately with plenty of water. Seek medical advice. Irritation or burns are the signs and symptoms that may result from an emergency or an unexpected acute overexposure.
Inhalation:
Move person to a non-contaminated area. If not breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably mouth-to-mouth. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion:
If the material is swallowed, get immediate medical attention or advice. Never give anything by mouth to a victim who is unconscious or is having convulsions. If patient has a good gag reflex, you can consider giving several ounces of water for dilution.
