Honeywell to Provide Safety Avionics Suite to Hainan Airlines

Package Includes Terrain Awareness Through Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS)

SINGAPORE, Feb. 2, 2010 -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it will provide an avionics suite for Hainan Airlines’ new Airbus A320 deliveries in the next three years. The contract details were not disclosed.

“Hainan Airline’s avionics selection includes our Air Data Inertial Reference Unit, or ADIRU, which provides 100% availability of Required Navigation Performance (RNP), increasing aircraft efficiency to keep Hainan on-schedule, and reducing costs through fuel savings,” said Mike Madsen, vice president, Airlines, Honeywell Aerospace. “With more than 35,000 inertial reference systems flying today, Honeywell provides the reliability and operations savings that will benefit Hainan as long as they fly these A320s.”

The selection of avionics also includes Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) Mode S, Solid State Data and Voice Recorders, Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) and Air Traffic Services Unit (ATSU) with Airline Operational Communication (AOC) software on 13 A320 deliveries beginning in 2010, with options for 30 additional A320 aircraft. The first 13 deliveries will also include ADIRUs.

EGPWS, invented by Honeywell, provides a terrain display and alerts the flight crew if the aircraft approaches too close to terrain. Honeywell’s SmartLanding system is also available as an EGPWS option. This is a field-installable software-only enhancement that enables the crew to verify the stability of the aircraft approach, preventing long landings and runway excursions.

Honeywell’s patented ACAS (aka TCAS - Traffic Alert & Collision Avoidance System) provides a display of surrounding aircraft and alerts the flight crew if another aircraft comes too close for safety. Solid-state data and voice recorders record flight data parameters and cockpit voice conversation for analysis. The ADIRU helps pilots keep the aircraft on course by sensing its movement in all three dimensions, allowing for more accurate navigation and routing. The ATSU with AOC provides communications management functionality across multiple aircraft platforms.
