Honeywell is working with aerospace industry giants to find ways to improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by developing practical biofuels to meet some of the growing global demand for jet fuel. Honeywell’s UOP business, part of Specialty Materials, is a recognized leader in process technology for the petrochemical industry, using its expertise to refine high-quality jet fuel biofeedstocks that do not compete with the food supply, including inedible weeds called jatropha and camelina. Together, with industry leaders such as Boeing, Airbus, and top airlines, UOP’s process technology is developing biofuels that have the same chemical properties as conventional fuels, eliminating the need for engine modifications and special handling. Tests are being conducted now on Honeywell-built turbofan jet engines and auxiliary power units.
