Pioneering Technology

Cliff Garrett began his aviation career in the 1920s, making 50 cents an hour as a Lockheed stockroom clerk. But that didn’t stop him from becoming a true pioneer in both the aerospace and automotive industries. Garrett’s aircraft pressurization technologies were instrumental to the capabilities of allied air forces during World War II and AiResearch systems that supplied oxygen to America’s first astronauts. The Garrett company is the foundation of today’s Honeywell Turbo Technologies business and its engineers were true innovators in the development of the latest turbocharging technologies – they introduced turbo for Caterpillar D9 tractor, the first American production diesel vehicles in 1955. In recognition of his accomplishments, Honeywell sponsors the Cliff Garrett Turbomachinery Engineering Award, presented annually by Society of Automobile Engineers International.
