Widely Acclaimed Hip-Hop Science Education Concert to Reach
20,000 Students During 12-Week Tour
MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., February 14, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and
the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will launch the
Spring 2008 tour of their award-winning FMA Live! science education
program at Long Middle School on February 19, in Atlanta, Georgia. The event
will be co-hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology and Atlanta Public
Schools. The innovative, traveling hip-hop science concert will reach
20,000 students during its 12-week, 20-city tour of the United States.
Named for Sir Isaac Newton’s second law of motion (force = mass x
acceleration) FMA Live! uses professional actors, original songs, music
videos and interactive science demonstrations to teach middle school students
Newton’s three laws of motion and universal law of gravity. Created by
Honeywell and NASA in 2004, FMA Live! has already traveled more than
50,400 miles, reaching more than 161,300 students at 435 middle schools in
39 U.S. states and Canada, with about half in disadvantaged areas.
“At Honeywell, the same rigor and business tools that we use to create
innovations for our company are applied to making a difference in the issues
that matter in our communities,” said Tom Buckmaster, President of Honeywell
Hometown Solutions. “With the spring tour, FMA Live! will continue
to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and their
teachers.”
In 2007, Georgia Tech participated in the Honeywell–Nobel Initiative, a
global education effort designed to connect students across the globe with
Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry and Physics. Honeywell has more than 800
employees in Georgia in its Honeywell Building Solutions, Honeywell Process
Solutions and Life Safety businesses, delivering the latest technology,
products and solutions to commercial and industrial customers.
Research shows that fewer students are pursuing science, math and
engineering careers while employment opportunities in these fields will
increase three times faster than all other occupations. FMA Live!
addresses key learning objectives identified by the National Science Education
Standards to increase student interest and participation in the sciences.
During each FMA Live! performance, students, teachers and school
administrators interact with three professional actors on stage in front of a
live audience to experience Newton’s laws firsthand. A giant sticky wall
is used to demonstrate inertia, go-carts driven across the stage illustrate
action and reaction, and ‘extreme’ wrestling and a huge soccer ball show that
force is determined by mass multiplied by acceleration. All three of Newton’s
laws are demonstrated simultaneously when a futuristic hover chair collides
with a gigantic cream pie. Educator and student feedback is
consistently and overwhelmingly positive after each tour stop.
FMA Live! will perform in the following locations during the spring
tour: Atlanta, Georgia; Lafayette and Indianapolis, Indiana; Richmond,
Virginia; Clearwater, Florida; Huntsville and Birmingham, Alabama; New Orleans,
Louisiana; Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Starkville, Mississippi; Las
Cruces and Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; Las
Vegas, Nevada; Apache Junction, Tucson and Sacaton, Arizona; and Tennessee.
In 2006 and 2007, FMA Live! received a Yahoo! Big Idea Award,
BrandWeek’s Gold Reggie Award for Best Community Outreach Campaign and
the Diamond Award Winner for Best Cause Marketing Campaign. In 2005, FMA
Live! received the gold SABRE award and was recognized as the best
community relations program worldwide by The Holmes Group. The entire program,
including the 18-wheel truck, tour bus and 10-person street team, is fully
funded by Honeywell.
